How often do you measure your irrigation system performance?
"I measure my irrigation performance once a month in the growing season. This includes checking all heads and cycles as well as nozzle output."
Kenny Pauley - Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, NC
"I measure on a weekly basis because we are in the desert. Visually through turf quality, yearly measured through cup measurements."
Jim Bozarth - UNLV, Las Vegas, NV
"When first starting in the spring green-up. Weekly and then bi-weekly during the growing season."
Bret Prather - Little Rock School District, Little Rock, AR
"Weekly - I check for broken heads, misalignment, and clogs. A visual check too, because I know the hot spots to check."
Joel Eaton - Paul Brown Stadium, Cincinnati, OH

When or how often should I water?
"Generally, for grass areas an inch of water (including rain) per week will suffice, but for plants it will be less. Drip irrgation puts out very little water over a long period of time and is probably about 0.5 inches per week."
Jay Pomeroy - Anderson-Johnson Associates, Minneapolis, MN
"I had a professor that said the best time to water is right before the plant wilts. Now we all know that is virtually impossible. I believe water can be your best friend or your worst enemy. In general, a soil profile should consist of 50% soil particles, 25% air and 25% water. If you water too much, there is not enough space for air in the root zone and that can lead to poor aeration. Another rule of thumb is to water thoroughly but less frequently. When in doubt, I prefer to stay a little on the dry side. "
Casey Gifford, Head Groundskeeper - Miami Dolphins Training Facility, Davie, FL
